Ben Stokes' wife Clare on Tuesday (October 8) brushed aside reports of the England all-rounder choking her at the Professional Cricketers' Association Awards Fiftieth Anniversary party.
Pictures emerged from the awards night which appeared to show Stokes grabbing his wife's throat. But Clare defended her husband in a Twitter post, saying “that's how we show affection”.
“Unbelievable what nonsense these people will make up! Me and Ben messing about squishing up each other’s faces cos that’s how we show affection and some pap tries to twist it in to a crazy story! And all before we then have a romantic McDonalds 20 mins later! @benstokes38,” she tweeted a few minutes after an article containing the photographs went live on social media.
The ace all-rounder responded to his wife's post with a face blowing a kiss emoji.
For his World Cup and Ashes heroics, Stokes bagged Players' Player of the Year at the Professional Cricketers' Association awards last week.
Stokes put a Man-of-the-Match performance in the World Cup 2019 final against New Zealand at Lord’s on July 14. He played an unbeaten knock of 98-ball 84 which helped England to level Black Caps’ score of 241 and then he scored 8 in the Super Over which also ended in a tie. The hosts were eventually declared winner as they hit more boundaries in the match.
The ace all-rounder then lit up the Ashes with his brilliance. He played an extraordinary knock of 135* that helped England to pull off a heist in the third Test at Headingley. While Australia retained the urn, England managed to level the Ashes 2-2 with Stokes being the Player-of-the-Series for the home team for his 441 runs from five Tests.
