The state of Kerala is celebrating the joyous harvest festival of Onam. As per legends, the festival is celebrated to commemorate King Mahabali, whose spirit is said to visit Kerala at the time of Onam.
This a major event for all the Malayali people in Kerala and outside the state. Onam, along with Vishu and Thiruvathira is one of the three major harvest festivals in the country. Onam celebrations include Vallam Kali (boat races), Pulikali (tiger dances), Pookkalam (flower Rangoli), Onathappan (worship), Onam Kali, Tug of War, Thumbi Thullal (women's dance), Kummattikali (mask dance), Onathallu (martial arts), Onavillu (music), Kazhchakkula (plantain offerings), Onapottan (costumes), Atthachamayam (folk songs and dance),
The festivities bring together people of all castes and religions and Onam is celebrated with all the joy and spirit by everyone. Even the Indian cricketers took to Twitter to wish the country and everyone on the joyous occasion of Onam.
