Stylish left-handed batsman Yuvraj Singh on Monday (June 10) announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing down the curtain on a stellar career. Accompanied by his wife and mother, Yuvraj disclosed his decision at a press conference held in Mumbai.
Yuvraj burst onto the scene during the second edition of the ICC Knockout Trophy in Kenya. Regarded as one of India's greatest white-ball cricketers, some of Yuvi’s career highlights range from playing a brilliant 69 run knock in the 2002 Natwest final, smashing England's Stuart Broad for six consecutive sixes in the inaugural edition of ICC World T20 to playing an instrumental role in India’s 2011 World Cup triumph.
Yuvraj was Player-of-the-Tournament in the 2011 World Cup. The southpaw had amassed 362 runs at an average of 90.50 and claimed 15 wickets in the 10th edition of the quadrennial event. He had played in the showpiece tournament while suffering from an illness and vomiting blood. The illness was later diagnosed as cancer on his left lung.
Subsequently, Yuvraj took a sabbatical from cricket for his treatment at the Cancer Research Institute in Boston, United States and eventually made a return to competitive cricket in September 2012.
Although he was not the same player post his return from illness, the left-hander often gave the glimpse of his brilliance in limited-overs cricket. He recorded his career-best ODI score of 150 during the three-match ODI series against England at home in January 2017.
