The former Indian captain and opener Gautam Gambhir, who had joined the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) just a few months ago and contested the 2019 Lok Sabha polls from East Delhi has taken a decisive lead over Congress’ Arvinder Singh Lovely and AAP’s Atishi Marlena.
By the time this article was written, Gautam Gambhir had 55.3% votes (6,96,156) to Lovely’s (3,04,934) and Atishi Marlena’s 2,19,328 votes.
Gambhir is a two-time World Cup winner with match-winning half-centuries in finals of both the 2007 World T20 in South Africa and 2011 ICC World Cup. He is also one of the few captains of India to win all the ODI matches he has captained the country in. He also led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to two IPL titles in 2012 and 2014. And is the second-most successful skipper in the league after MS Dhoni with 71 victories as compared to Dhoni's 104.
Gambhir had tweeted, "Neither it's a 'Lovely' cover drive and nor it is an 'Atishi' ballebaazi. It's just the BJP's 'gambhir' ideology which people have supported. Thanks a lot to all the BJP team-mates for getting this mandate. We won't fail people's choice."
The Indian cricket fraternity and Gambhir’s former teammates took to Twitter and congratulated one of their own for his first ever victory in the new field of politics.
