Sam Billings of CSK and Alex Hales slam English fans for undermining the IPL

Billings is part of the Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2019, while Hales played for MI and SRH.

Sam Billings of CSK | IANSThe Indian Premier League has become a brand name in itself since its inception in 2008. The very first franchise-based T20 cricket league in the world, IPL was launched by BCCI when to encash the growing popularity of the T20 format thanks to the Indian team, which had won the ICC World T20 in 2007.

Over the last decade, many players have become global superstars thanks to their performances in the IPL and even got a chance to represent their national teams. The success of IPL became a blueprint for other leagues such as the Big Bash League, The Caribbean Premier League and The Pakistan Super League amongst others.

However, some people still cannot fathom the meteoric rise of the Indian Premier League and one such fan from England chose to criticize the IPL for doing nothing for the longest format of the game. He compared the viewership that an English county game featuring Somerset got in England, to the popularity of the league in the country, which will be hosting the ICC World Cup 2019.

Here are some of the tweets that the fans put out undermining the value of the IPL:

However, as a knight in shining armor, England’s own Sam Billings, who is part of Chennai Super Kings’ squad for IPL 2019, came forward to take the critic on and served some cold facts to refute his claims. Even Alex Hales contributed his two pounds to the conversation.

He highlighted the importance of IPL to the fan and even gave the picture proof of madness for the league in India.
