Tainted Australia cricketer David Warner made his Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) debut on Sunday (January 6). Warner, who is leading the Sylhet Sixers franchise in the tournament, couldn’t make a lot of runs as his maiden innings was spoiled by a comical run-out. The Warne-led side also lost the match by four wickets at the hands of fellow banned Aussie cricketer Steve Smith-led Comilla Victorians.

After losing Liton Das early, Warner was trying to consolidate the innings with Towhid Hridoy. However, the southpaw lost his wicket in the fifth over after he rushed from the non-striker’s end to take a quick single. Towhid, who struck the ball to the square-leg region, wasn’t anticipating a run and remained still at the crease.

In the meantime, Mohammad Shahid picked up the ball and threw it straight to veteran Pakistan all-rounder Shoaib Malik, who collected it and dislodged the bails to send Warner packing for 14.

Warner is currently serving the 12-month ban from international cricket after he was found to be the chief instigator in the ball-tampering plot at Newlands in March 2018. After the sanction imposed by Cricket Australia, the BCCI had also barred the opener from participating in the Indian Premier League 2018.

Last year, Warne played in a Twenty20 league in Canada. He represented Winnipeg Hawks in the tournament and followed it with a stint in the Caribbean Premier League for St Lucia Stars.
