Virat Kohli-led Team India defeated Australia by 31 runs in the first Test to take a 1-0 lead in the four-match series here on Monday. Chasing 323, Australia was all out for 291 in 119.5 overs on the final day at the Adelaide Oval. 

The victory was India's first series-opening win down under and first after the famous win in Perth back in 2008. India returned with no wins in 2011-12 under MS Dhoni; suffering a 4-0 loss and a 2-0 defeat during the 2014-15 tour.

Cheteshwar Pujara was picked as the Man of the Match for his 16th Test century(123 runs) in first innings and 71 runs in second innings in the game.

The game was almost a mirror of India's famous win at Adelaide back in 2003. In that game, India's number three --Rahul Dravid-- had scored a double century in the first innings and a half-century in second, similar to Pujara.

India has gone 1-0 up in the series and the second match will be played at Perth on December 14.
