Legendary Indian boxer MC Mary Kom created history by winning her sixth gold medal in the World Boxing Championships on Saturday (Nov 24). She had earlier won gold in 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2010.
She defeated Ukraine’s Hanna Okata in a unanimous 5-0 verdict in the 48kg category summit bout. The Olympic bronze medallist fought this bout which coincided with her 36th birthday. The results read 30-27, 29-28, 29-28, 30-27, 30-27 in favor of Mary Kom who had beaten the opponent in a tournament in Poland this year.
With her 6th world championship gold, Mary Kom matched Cuban legend Felix Savon as the joint most successful pugilist (men and women) in the Championships history.
Mary Kom said after her win, "I dedicate this gold to the nation and my countrymen."
The Indian cricket fraternity also saluted the spirit and skills of the most famous woman pugilist to emerge from India and showered praises on Mary Kom on Twitter.
