Former Australia wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist has hailed India captain Virat Kohli for his comments on the traditional format of the game.
The growth of Twenty20 cricket all across the globe has seen a lot of players becoming freelancers. The prospect of earning huge bucks in a short span of time has forced players to be more inclined towards the shortest format. No wonder, the Test match skills are diminishing and teams are consistently getting whitewashed on away tours.
Raising his concern over the same, Kohli, arguably the best batsman in the world right now, recently urged cricket’s governing body (ICC) and the respective boards to preserve the most beautiful format of the game.
“I think that if you really understand the sport, if you really love the sport, you understand Test cricket and you understand how exciting it is. I cannot explain to you the job satisfaction that you get when you do well in Test cricket, because you know how demanding it is,” Kohli told Wisden Cricket Monthly earlier this week.
“It’s the most beautiful format of the game. I don’t think it’s going to go anywhere. I don’t even see it getting compressed to four days. It should not be tinkered with,” he further added.
The Indian captain is now receiving praise from all quarters for his remarks on red-ball cricket. On Thursday (August 30), Aussie cricket legend Adam Gilchrist lauded him for the same.
Taking to Instagram, Gilchrist wrote: “Pleasing remarks from @virat.kohli Really, really pleasing remarks. Currently one of the most important opinions in the game and I like what he’s saying.”
