Usually, the people of Kerala decked up their houses and dressed in the traditional white attire on the occasion of Onam. However, this year the circumstances are a bit different as the Keralaite are trying to get back on their feet after the state saw the worst flood in a century.
The situation was so grim that more than 400 people lost their lives because of torrential rains and flood in Kerala. After taking stock of the situation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced a grant of Rs 500 crore apart from the Rs 100 crore declared by Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
Earlier this month, Onam celebrations was cancelled by the Kerala government. Even outside Kerala, Onam celebrations are reported to be held in a low-key fashion in solidarity with those affected by the horrific flood. But the festive spirit will linger on despite all adversities especially among the youngsters.
Indian cricket fraternity on Saturday (August 25) extended Onam greetings to the people of Kerala and hoped the festival would give them more strength to overcome adversities.
