He had won the backing from the newly-elected Parliament a day before.

The ceremony was held at the President’s House in Pakistan’s capital Islamabad. A tearful Khan, clad in a traditional black sherwani, smiled as he stumbled over some of the words of the oath administered to him by President Mamnoon Hussain.

65-year-old Imran Khan swore to "bear true faith and allegiance to Pakistan", and to "discharge my duties and perform my functions honestly, to the best of my ability... and always in the interest of the sovereignty, integrity, solidarity, well-being, and prosperity of Pakistan."

Congress leader and former India cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu was present at the ceremony as a special invite from Khan himself. Khan's government will be the third consecutive democratic government in Pakistan since 2008 when military ruler Gen Pervez Musharraf announced elections after serving as president from 2001 to 2008 following a bloodless coup in 1999.

Pakistani cricket fraternity was elated that one of their own and mentor to many of Pakistan’s great players, Imran Khan had become the Prime Minister of the country and took to Twitter to send congratulatory messages and wishes to their PM.

Here are some of the wishes:
