The much-awaited Test series between England and India finally kicked off on Wednesday (August 1) at Edgbaston, Birmingham.

England skipper Joe Root won the toss and opted to bat first. The hosts started off cautiously against the Indian pacers. Ravichandran Ashwin drew the first blood for India as he knocked over Alastair Cook’s off stump with a peach of a delivery.

The duo of Keaton Jennings and Root forged a 72-run stand for the second wicket to put the home team in a strong position before Mohammed Shami pulled things back for India with two quick wickets. Shami removed the well-settled Jennings and Dawid Malan to reduce England to 163/3 at Tea break.

Apart from the fierce contest between bat and ball, the cricket fans also witnessed some amusing moments during the first two sessions of play on the opening day.

During the post-lunch session, India head coach Ravi Shastri was seen taking a nap in the dressing room while Harbhajan Singh was commentating for the host's broadcaster. As the cameras caught Shastri napping, Harbhajan asked India’s assistant coach Sanjay Bangar, who was listening commentary with his earpiece on, to wake up the chief coach.

Subsequently, Bangar passed the message to Shastri and then the latter woke up and started laughing. Harbhajan’s antics in the commentary box certainly brought smile on everyone’s face.
