26th July is celebrated as the Kargil Vijay Diwas by the entire nation of the Republic of India. Kargil Vijay Diwas is named after the success of Operation Vijay. The Kargil War was fought for over 60 days to remove Pakistani army and insurgents from high outposts in Kashmir.
This day is celebrated in the Kargil - Dras sector and the national capital New Delhi, where the Prime Minister of India, pays homage to the soldiers at Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate every year.
In winter of 1998-1999, Pakistan armed forces infiltrated the Indian Territory via LOC in an operation named ‘Operation Badr’. The aim of the Pakistani incursion was to sever the link between Kashmir and Ladakh and cause Indian forces to withdraw from the Siachen Glacier.
This led to an all-out war in the Kargil- Dras sector between India and Pakistan in which nuclear assault was seen as a possible move from Pakistan side. The Government of India responded with Operation Vijay, a mobilization of 200,000 Indian troops. Finally, war came to an official end on July 26, 1999, thus making it as Kargil Vijay Diwas.
Vijay Diwas also commemorates the sacrifice of 527 soldiers from Indian Armed Forces.
The Indian Cricket Fraternity took to Twitter and paid their respects to Indian Armed Forces and celebrated Kargil Vijay Diwas.
Here are some of the tweets:
