Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif announced his retirement from all forms of competitive cricket on Friday (July 13). Having stamped his name in the cricket history with a match-winning knock of 87* in the Natwest Trophy final of 2002 against England at Lord’s, Kaif chose the very date - 16 years later - to call time on his professional career.

Yuvraj Singh, who had shared a 121-run partnership with Kaif for the sixth wicket to bail India out of trouble in the Natwest final, send his warm wishes to the retired cricketer on Saturday (July 14).

Taking to Twitter, Yuvi wrote: “Well done kaifi U shd be proud of ur efforts & commitments u showed in ur career. One of the best finisher & fielder Indian cricket produced after me tho ???? very proud to hav played along side u specially the NatWest’02 finals whc a true Indian fan dearly cherishes @MohammadKaif”.

Yuvraj and Kaif share a very healthy camaraderie. Both of them are widely regarded as one of the finest fielders that India has ever produced. During the five-year period in which Kaif was an India regular, it was his electric fielding inside the 30-yard circle along with Yuvi that made the duo fan favourites.

Apart from his Lord's heroic, Kaif's century against Zimbabwe in the ICC Champions Trophy 2002 will also remain etched in memory as he lifted the team from the dumps after the top order crumbled.

In his 125 ODI appearances for India, Kaif amassed 2753 runs at an average of 32.01, including two hundreds and 17 half-centuries while he scored 624 Test runs in 13 matches at 32.84 with one ton and three fifties.

Kaif always remained a quality player in domestic cricket leading UP for many years. He finished with 10229 first-class runs with 19 hundreds across 186 matches.
