The Sri Lankan cricket team skipper Dinesh Chandimal was charged for ball tampering and he may face ban after umpires viewed replays of the second day’s play in the Test match against the West Indies.

Chandimal has pleaded not guilty to ball-tampering charges and will be appearing in a hearing after the second test, as the International Cricket Council (ICC) said.

A video of the Sri Lankan captain is circulating on the internet. He was seen taking sweets out from his left pocket and putting in his mouth, before applying the artificial substance to the ball which the umpires viewed as an attempt to change its condition. Illegally alters the condition of the ball is an offense in cricket.

The umpires had laid the charge of ball tampering before the start of third day's play of the match. Five penalty runs were also added to West Indies' score after the incident. But the Sri Lankan team were not happy with the charges and refused to take the field.

But after ICC match referee Javagal Srinath issued an ultimatum: either Sri Lanka takes the field before given time or forfeit the game, they resumed play just before the time given.
