It is the 'World No Tobacco Day' today (May 31). The theme for this year’s Tobacco Day is "Tobacco and heart disease". You may have heard time and again that "smoking is injurious to health", yet when it comes to giving up this habit, people find one reason or the other to stick on.

Considering the significance of the day, former India cricketers VVS Laxman, Harbhajan Singh and Virender Sehwag drew everyone’s attention towards the deadly side-effects of this habit which takes thousands of lives each year.

Taking to micro-blogging site Twitter, Laxman wrote: “Smoking leaves an unseen scar, It fills your insides with toxins and tar. Put it out before it puts you out,” with the campaign hashtag “#WorldNoTobaccoDay”.

Sehwag, who mentored Kings XI Punjab in the recently concluded Indian Premier League, tweeted: "Tobacco companies kill their best customers. Please don’t consume tobacco, you are not a truck to emit smoke. Do yourself and your loved ones a favour , quit tobacco. #WorldNoTobaccoDay”.

Highlighting the noxious consequences of smoking and tobacco chewing, veteran India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh wrote: “This #WorldNoTobaccoDay I urge you all to quit smoking and chewing tobacco. Only you have the power to change your lifestyle. Be strong! #KickTheButt ????”.

Tobacco, if consumed in excess can take a toll on multiple organs and even pave way to a painful death. Tobacco addiction has been one of the biggest challenges faced by the 20th century. On the other hand, Smoking destroys the health and happiness besides burning a big hole in your pocket.
