Virender Sehwag tweets his views on the tribal youth lynching case in Kerala

Madhu, a mentally challenged tribal from Kerala was beaten to death by a mob for stealing rice from a shop.

On 23rd February, 2018, a shocking incident of human apathy and lack of basic decency came to light as a mentally unsound tribal man from Kerala’s Attappadi was beaten to death by a mob of youths, who accused him of stealing rice from one of the youth’s shop to fulfill his hunger.

The tribal youth, Madhu was tied up and beaten mercilessly by the mob, before being handed to the police for stealing 1 kg of rice. However, he started vomiting in the police van and was pronounced dead at the hospital. The entire episode was shot on a mobile and posted on social media.

Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag, who is not the one to back off from voicing his opinions on social issues, tweeted his view on the lynching of Madhu, at the hands of some youth.

He tweeted, “Madhu stole 1 kg rice. A mob of Ubaid , Hussain and Abdul Kareem lynched the poor tribal man to death. This is a disgrace to a civilised society and I feel ashamed that this happens and kuch farak nahi padta.

The sad part was that the locals took selfies with the tied tribal youth as he was beaten, instead of stopping the mob. The mob can be seen enjoying the torture meted out to Madhu and the police have registered a case of attempt-to-murder against 15 people and arrested seven of them. Madhu used to live in the forest occasionally and was mentally challenged.

The post mortem report revealed that Madhu died of internal bleeding due to been beaten up severely and sustained injuries on his head and his ribs were broken.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said, "This heinous act is a blot on Kerala's progressive society. But I want to assure you that strict action will be taken at the earliest against all the culprits to ensure that such crimes, especially against people from communities that were long marginalised, are not repeated.

The government announced Rs 10 lakh financial assistance to the family of the youth.
