18th January marks the 70th Army Day for the Indian armed forces. The day is celebrated in recognition of  Field Marshal K M Cariappa‘s taking over as India’s first commander in chief from General Francis Butcher, last British commander in chief.

After the independence, it took almost one year and four months for any Indian officer to take charge of Indian Army. The reins of Indian Army were finally transferred to Cariappa on Jan 15, 1949. Indian Army also pays homage to soldiers who have been killed during their service to the nation.

Indian cricketers too came forward and took to Twitter in order to salute the spirits of the Indian army jawans and the whole of the Indian armed forces.
