The new season of Women's Big Bash League didn't start as Harmanpreet Kaur might have expected with the bat. But the Indian all-rounder made it up for the Sydney Thunder and showed what's coming up for her team in the season ahead.

Thunders had already packed the game. With 12 needed on the last ball, left-handed Amy Sattherthwaite played a lofted drive straight into Kaur's hand. She ran in a few meters before completing the catch with full-length dive forward. It was a tough catch, but she caught it with ease.

Sattherthwaite was dismissed for five off the bowling of Stafanie Taylor.

Kaur also bowled an over, but that did not go well as she conceded 16 runs and was hit for two boundaries and a six. She also couldn't do much with the bat. Harmanpreet, who shined after a stunning century against Australia in the World Cup, managed only eight runs.

In the season opener, the hosts, Sydney Thunder struggled early on and after Harman was dismissed were in deep trouble at 41/4. Rachael Haynes scored a half-century and Nicola Carey’s big shots took the Thunder to a formidable 200.

In the chase, Melbourne Renegades were driven on by Jessica Duffin and Chamari Athapaththu’s, but despite their best efforts, they fell 11 runs short in the run chase. Keeping aside the huge hits in the Twenty over match, the catching was also a highlight of the opening day of the WBBL.
