Kohli, who was sacked from the ODI captaincy last week, is understood to have informed the BCCI in advance about his decision.

Team India are due to play three Tests and as many ODIs on the tour of South Africa. While the Test series will be held from December 26 to January 15, the 50-over series will be played from January 19 to January 23.

According to a TOI report, Kohli is going to miss the ODIs as he is taking time off to celebrate his daughter Vamika's first birthday. The Indian Test skipper was blessed with a baby girl on January 11 last year and he is planning a holiday with his family after the Test series against South Africa.

Notably, Virat Kohli was also rested for the home T20I series against New Zealand last month and the first of two Tests before returning for the Mumbai game, which India won by 372 runs to clinch the series.

On the other hand, Rohit has been ruled out of the Test series after sustaining a left hamstring injury. Priyank Panchal has been named his replacement in the red-ball squad.

The report suggests that Rohit’s injury is not a tear and he is likely to be available in three weeks' time to lead the white-ball team.

Amid the recent development, the reports of rift between Kohli and Sharma are also doing the rounds but TOI clarified that the duo being unavailable for the respective formats has nothing to do with the ongoing controversy related to the white-ball captaincy changing hands.
