India will be playing Sri Lanka on June 8 in their second
match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017. Both the teams have played lots of ODIs
in last 15 years and one time period had both of them playing ODI series so frequently
that them playing this ODI after a big break is refreshing.
During the 90s and 2000s, Sri Lanka heavily dominated the
ODI scene thanks to them winning the World Cup in 1996, while India had to deal
with a thing batting lineup, until the arrival of Sourav Ganguly and Rahul
Dravid, which changed the scene in India's favor. In recent times though, India
have severely overpowered Sri Lanka, who lost their legends in Murali and Vaas
in 2011 and 2010 respectively and Sangakkara and Jayawardene in 2015.
Both the teams have played numerous finals of tournaments
and many classic matches, but we have managed to find 5 matches that were not
only interesting, but Indian managed to win these matches by giving their 100%.

India v Sri Lanka, Wanderers, World Cup 2003
India had a brilliant run in World Cup 2003 after their
first loss against Australia in group stages. India faced Sri Lanka in the
Super Sixes round at Wanderers in Johannesburg. India were put into bat by Sri Lanka
and they were made to rue their decision immediately.
Sachin Tendulkar led the charge with a brilliant innings of
97. Sehwag (66) and Sachin added 156 runs in 27 overs to give India a platform
needed to score big runs. However, Sri Lanka pegged them back with wickets in
the last few overs and India managed 292/6 in 50 overs.

Old warhorses Muralitharan took 3/46 and Vaas took 2/34 in
their quota of 10 overs. Aravinda de Silva pitched in with the important wicket
of Sachin, who was smacking the ball to all parts of the ground.
Sri Lankan batting had the experience and depth to overhaul India's
total. However Javagal Srinath, who was coaxed by Sourav Ganguly into playing
his final World Cup in 2003, decided to make a mark on this match. He removed
Atapattu (0), Jayasuriya (12), Mubarak (0) and Aravinda de Silva (0) in a span
of 8 overs to leave Sri Lanka reeling at 40/5. Srinath ended up with the
figures of 4/35
Rest of the work was done by Ashish Nehra who also picked up 4/35 and Zaheer Khan who took 2/33 and Sri Lanka crumbled to 109 all out in 23 overs. India won the match by 183 runs and Javagal Srinath won his final Man of the match award in his international career.
India v Sri Lanka, Rajkot, 2009
Sri Lanka put India into bat first on a dead Rajkot pitch
and it turned out to be a run fest. India raced to 153 in 20 overs thanks to Sachin
Tendulkar (69 runs with 10 fours and 1 six) aiding a rampaging Virender Sehwag.
MS Dhoni carried the momentum, by promoting himself to no.3 and smacked 72 runs
in 53 balls with 7 fours and 3 sixes. Virat Kohli made 27 in 19 balls and Jadeja
hit 30 runs in 17 balls to take India to a mammoth 414/7 in 50 overs.
The hero for India was Virender Sehwag who blasted 146 in
102 balls with 17 fours and 6 sixes. He added 153 runs with Tendulkar and 156
runs with MS Dhoni before getting out. For Sri Lanka, Fernando, Kulasekara and
Welegedara took 2 wickets each for 60 odd runs, while Jayasuriya went for 76
runs in his 7 overs.

Not one thought that Sri Lanka will make a match out of it,
but Sangakkara must have told his batsmen to go out and give their destructive
best. Tharanga (67) and a Dilshan in murderous mood took Sri Lanka to 188 in 24
overs before Tharanga got out. Then came the real mayhem as Kumar Sangakkara
and Dilshan went ballistic on the Indian bowlers. Both the batsmen were going
gung-ho from both ends.
Sangakkara made 90 runs in just 43 balls with 10 fours and 5
sixes. Dilshan scored his career best 160 in 124 balls with 20 fours and 3
sixes. Both added 128 runs in just 13 overs. However, Indian bowlers brought India
in the game again with cheap wickets of Jayasuriya (5) and Jayawardene (3).
But as India got complacent, Kandamby (24) and Mathews (38)
grabbed the opportunity and added quickfire 56 runs and SL needed 11 runs from
the last over. However, Nehra bowled a tidy over and SL ended up on 411/8, 3
runs short of the target.
India won an amazing run fest, where their most economical bowler was Harbhajan with figures of 2/58.
India v Sri Lanka, Taunton,
World Cup 1999
Sri Lanka were the defending champions of the World Cup in
1999, but were not having a great tournament. India also had a lackluster
tournament also, but this match proved to be the one shining star for India,
apart from the win over Pakistan, amidst the Kargil War tension.
The venue was Taunton and Sri Lanka asked India to bat first
and Vaas got Ramesh pout for 5 runs in the first over. However, it was their
only wicket for 45 overs, as Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid batted for the
next 45 overs and put on the first ever 300 runs partnership in history of ODI
cricket.

Ganguly was the more severe off the two and scored his
highest ODI score and India's highest score in World Cup cricket of 183 in 158
balls with 17 fours and 7 sixes. Dravid kept him company with 145 runs in 129
balls with 17 fours and 1 six. Both of them added 318 runs and India were 324
when Dravid got run out. India lost some quick wickets and managed to make
373/6 in 50 overs.
Pramodya Wickramasinghe took 3/65 and was the best bowler
for Sri Lanka in the mayhem, where both of their opening bowlers went for over
80 runs.
Sri Lanka had the fire power to chase that score, but Robin Singh
made sure they didn't do that. After Srinath and Mohanty removed Jayasuriya,
Kaluwitharana and Atapattu for cheap, Robin Singh swung into action and
took 5/31. Aravinda de Silva made 56 and captain Ranatunga made 42 runs but,
Sri Lanka folded for 216 runs and India won by a huge margin of 157 runs.
Sourav Ganguly won the man of the match award for his record making 183.
India v Sri Lanka, R
Premdasa Stadium, 1998
Sri Lanka and India met in the finals of the tri-nation
tournament the Singer Akai Nidahas Trophy in 1998, which marked the celebration
of 50th anniversary of Sri Lanka's independence.
India won the toss and decided to bat first on a regular
looking Premdasa pitch. India's newly formed opening partnership of Sachin Tendulkar
and Sourav Ganguly decided to rewrite history on this day as both of them took
the Sri Lankan bowlers to the cleaners. Sachin made 128 with 8 fours and 2
sixes and Sourav made 109 with 6 fours and 2 sixes and together, they made 252
runs for the opening wicket, which was the record at that time and stood till
2001, when they themselves broke their record.

India made 307/6 and only Jayasuriya took 2/42 in the Indian
rampage. Sri Lanka looked good to give a tough fight to India in their
backyard.
Jayasuriya-Kaluwitharana gave them a start of 59 runs in 8
overs. Then Marvan Atapattu (39), Roshan Mahanama (44) and Ranatunga (23)
batted around the marvelous Aravinda de Silva who made a brilliant century, 105
in just 94 balls including 10 fours. He along with others took Sri Lanka closer
to the target.
But some sloppy batting, losing wickets at wrong time and pressure by Indian fielders left Sri Lanka on 301, 6 runs short of the target. Ajit Agarkar took 4/53 and Sachin Tendulkar took the Man of the match award.
India v Sri Lanka,
Mumbai, Final- World Cup 2011
We have kept the most brilliant and high pressure match for
the last. This match was the finals of the World Cup in 2011 and Mumbai hosted
both Sri Lanka and India for this high voltage and pressure match.
Kumar Sangakkara won the toss and decided to bat first on a
very dicey looking Mumbai pitch. Tharanga went back for 6 and Dilshan was
bowled by Harbhajan for 33. However, the two old warhorses of Sri Lankan
cricket, Sangakkara (48) and Jayawardene, who scored a mesmerizing 103* stabilized
Sri Lanka.
Later on, Kulasekara (32) and Perera (22 in 9 balls) pushed
Sri Lanka past the 270 mark. This was perhaps the greatest Jayawardene innings
ever in ODIs, as it came in trying circumstances, on a dusty Mumbai pitch and
under immense pressure of a World Cup final.

India received a big jolt, when Malinga sent Virender Sehwag
back on to pavilion on the 2nd ball of the innings and then sent
back Tendulkar for 18 runs and stunned the Wankhede Stadium into silence.
Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli (35) added 83 runs for the 3rd
wicket. MS Dhoni moved up the order, in front of the eventual Man of the tournament
Yuvraj Singh at no.5 and made history. Dhoni and Gambhir, who fell 3 short of a
well-deserved hundred on 97, put on the match winning 109 run partnership and
slowly turned the game into India's favor.
Then Yuvraj (21*) and Dhoni (91*) added the required 54 runs
for the victory. The win came in the 49th over, as Dhoni hoisted
Kulasekara into the long on crowd for a World Cup winning six and held the pose
for the shutterbugs, as the whole stadium went crazy around him.
Sri Lanka lost their second World Cup final in a row and
Kumar Sangakkara accepted defeat with grace and smile, as Sachin Tendulkar and
the whole Indian team ran onto the ground and hugged Dhoni and Yuvraj, who was
later diagnosed with cancer and revealed played the tournament with that illness.
India became the World Champions for the second time,28 years after their 1983 victory under Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni said that they did it for the guy who had served India with full pride and duty- Sachin Tendulkar.
