Ekta Bisht’s 4-fer helps India women to a 66-run win over England women in 1st WODI

India women’s team commenced their three-match WODI series against the visiting England women’s team under the ICC Women's Championship with the first match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

England captain Heather Knight won the toss and chose to field first. The Indian openers Smriti Mandhana (24) and Jemimah Rodrigues (48 in 58 balls with 8 fours) added 69 runs for the first wicket. Skipper Mithali Raj also contributed 44 runs, but the Indian team lost wickets in the middle overs, as Georgia Elwiss and Natalie Sciver picked two wickets each.

Tania Bhatia (25) and Jhulan Goswami (30) propelled the Indian team past 200 and they were bowled out for 202 in the final over. Sophie Ecclestone also picked 2/27 and helped the bowling unit keep India women under a par score.

The England women’s team was expected to overhaul the target easily, but Shikhar Pandey dealt two crucial blows, removing Amy Jones for 1 and Sarah Taylor for 10 runs. Deepti Sharma then removed Tammy Beaumont for 18 and Dannielle Wyatt for 1 run.

Then Ekta Bisht took over and demolished the England middle and lower middle order picking 4/25. She was named the Player of the Match for her bowling effort.

Heather Knight remained not out for 39 and Natalie Sciver top-scored with 44 runs, as England women were bundled out for just 136 in 41 overs. They lost the match by 66 runs and went 1-0 down in the 3-match series.
