Before the start of the second day, Australia was well settled at 244 for 3 wickets down with Steven Smith batting at 65 and Shaun Marsh at 31 not out. England on other half was desperate for a wicket and break Australia's batting line-up apart.

The second day begins with Steven Smith and Marsh on the crease, both the batsmen started to score runs and Smith registered his 500 runs for this Ashes series, leading his team from the front all Australia have ever wanted but the debutant Tom Curran bowled Steven Smith out and break 100 run partnership between the two.

England bowlers came to the party as Australia wickets started to fall frequently, the English bowlers took 6 wickets for only 67 runs and summing up Australia's first inning score to 327. England was back in the game with the downfall of Australia.

England had finally come the series with a five-wicket session. The session had ended in exactly the opposite way to it started. Smith and Shaun Marsh looked compact, easy and there was nothing threatening either in the wicket or the opening spells that Anderson and Broad bowled. Broad was quick of the bowlers with grabbing 4 important wickets and debutant demolishing Steven Smith would be his dream wicket.

England openers came to bat at the middle stage of the day with openers Alastair Cook and Mark Stoneman the Britishers had to put a solid partnership in front of the Aussies. Hazlewood opened the attack for his team in the absence of Mitchell Starc, but it was the off-spinner who had drew the first blood of Stoneman with the visitors 35 for 1 down.

Surprisingly, Alastair Cook looked more steady today with moving his feet and batting to the conditions of Melbourne cricket ground, he had to play a lot more sensibly this time with scoring some runs under his willow.

Two back to back sessions for England had them on top with wickets and positive attitude from Alastair Cook, they were standing still on 72 for 1 at the end of second session's play.
Hazlewood made Vince on his steps back to the pavilion on 17 runs with making way for the Captain Joe Root who had to play the role of a Captain, Cook had reached his half-century by then. 

Root was constantly connecting the balls with rotating the strike with the openers made Australia stressful for a wicket but both the batsmen were in a different mood today, gradually they shifted gears and started to score runs easily. 

At the end of second days play, Cook struck his 32nd test century with Root cruising towards his another half-century. The day was totally in England's grip with their score 192 for 2, they still trail by 135 runs with Day 3 yet to come, they have the match in control.
