After the three-match T20I series finished at 1-1, India drew first blood in the three-match Test series. They were clinical in their performance at Visakhapatnam as they beat South Africa by a margin of 203 runs. After winning the toss and batting first, India rode on the big centuries made by the openers and they racked up 502 before declaring. South Africa fought hard too. On the back of tons from Dean Elgar and Quinton de Kock, the visitors kept the deficit down to 71 runs. However, India bossed the game from the second innings as they put the foot on the accelerator and set South Africa a target of 395 with a little over a day to go. The Proteas crumbled in the fourth innings to hand India a 1-0 lead in this series. Hence, India gained 40 World Test Championship points as well which solidified their position at the top. The action now moves to Pune for the second Test where India will try to seal the series and create history by becoming the first team to register 11 successive Test series wins at home.

Best economical pick – Mayank Agarwal and Rohit Sharma opened together for the first time and had a wonderful outing. Both of them scored big hundreds as they laid the platform for India’s first innings total. The duo shared a mammoth stand of 317 runs in the first innings and made South Africa wait for 82 overs to get their first wicket of the series. Agarwal scored his maiden Test century which he then converted to a fantastic double ton. Proteas batsman Quinton de Kock has moved back into the Top 10 of the ICC Test batting rankings following their defeat against India in the first Test. De Kock returned to the Top 10 as he gained four places and moved to seventh for scoring his first Test century against India. De Kock made 111 off 163 balls in the first innings and shared a 164-run partnership with opener Elgar.

Top captains & vice captains – Rohit Sharma who opened the batting for the first time in Test cricket could do no wrong. He blasted twin centuries as he scored 176 and 127 to run away with the Man of the Match award as well. It was his acceleration in the second innings that allowed India to set a big target.

Smart pick – Indian left-arm all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja picked up his 200th Test wicket on Day 3 of the first Test against South Africa at Visakhapatnam. With that, Jadeja also became the fastest left-arm bowler to take 200 wickets in Test cricket. Jadeja took just 44 Tests to reach the mark, surpassing Rangana Herath of Sri Lanka (47 matches) who previously held the record.

Cautions Pick – Rishabh Pant has been facing a lot of backlash after failing to deliver consistently at the international level. His poor shot selection has frequently put his team into trouble. Pant had scores of 27, 24 and 7 versus West Indies. Though he has been good when it comes to keeping behind the wickets, his poor form with the bat has been piling pressure on him.

My XI – Rohit Sharma(Captain), Quinton de Kock (Vice-Captain), Mayank Agarwal, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Dean Elgar, Ajinkya Rahane, Virat Kohli, Dane Piedt, Keshav Maharaj, Mohammed Shami
