Mominul stresses upon difficulties without long-term captaincy assurance

The left-hand batsman took over as Bangladesh Test captain last year in accidental circumstances.

Mominul Haque | GettyThree games into his job, Bangladesh Test skipper Mominul Haque revealed that he hasn't been given any assurance of continuing as nation's captain in the traditional format in future.

Mominul took over from prominent all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan in November last year ahead of the two-match series in India in accidental circumstances with Shakib banned by the ICC for failing to report a corrupt approach.

Under Mominul, Bangladesh has suffered disappointing losses in Indore, Kolkata and recently, Rawalpindi on the tour to Pakistan. But those could hardly be put down to flaws in his captaincy, especially with him trying his best in a struggling batting line-up, as the same well-documented domestic game issues continue to hold Bangladesh back at the Test match level.

"I am not informed clearly about it [whether I am appointed on long term basis or series by series basis]," the 28-year-old left-hander told Cricbuzz. "As far as long term captaincy is concerned - not only in captaincy but in any work if you are doing with long term contract, then it becomes easy. You can make plans, what players want, when you will use them, team management - everything becomes easy."

Mominul, however, also said he is feeling more confident with time at the helm of affairs, and is quite upbeat over his team's chances going into the one-off home Test versus Zimbabwe, success in which shall help when Bangladesh goes back to Pakistan for the second Test championship fixture of the series in Karachi in April.

"I was nervous in the first series, but now I am enjoying," he said. "I didn't understand it at first but now slowly I understand how it works. Learning how I should progress and plan and make it work. It's a gradual process, I guess you learn something or the other each and every day. I am taking my time and trying to analyse where I went wrong or you can say how I could have handled that situation differently."

Chemistry with head coach Russell Domingo is also important as Mominul fights his way through this uncertain phase, although he understands it's the on-field results that will ultimately decide the extent of his tenure.

"Yes I do have a very good understanding with Domingo and we have almost the same mentality though it [our chemistry] won't matter until we can come up with good performance."

"(Though), I don't feel like there is any pressure due to captaincy. What I feel is like I am understanding the game better or you can say trying to understand it more," Mominul said. "And you can't make a judgement just by one or two matches because after taking the leadership I played only two Test series. I think it will get better. Now I think about many things and when I will understand these things better, my performance will get better too."
