The third Test of the four-match series between South Africa and England got underway at St George's Park, Port Elizabeth. The series is leveled 1-1 with England winning handsomely at Cape Town in the second Test.
England won the toss and Joe Root chose to bat. The visitors included Mark Wood in the team, while Proteas handed a debut to Dane Paterson. England openers Dom Sibley and Zak Crawley added 70 runs for the first wicket with Crawley making 44 and Sibley hitting 36. Then Joe Denly (25) and Joe Root (27) steadied the ship. Kagiso Rabada sent back Sibley and Root to end the day with 2/41, while Nortje removed Crawley.
Meanwhile, Denly fell to Maharaj. Stokes remained unbeaten on 25, while Pope made 33* when stumps were called. England ended the day on 224/4.
