SA v ENG 2020: Kallis not yet losing hope of a victory in Cape Town Test for South Africa

South Africa needs to pull off the highest successful chase ever to win the Newlands Test.

South Africa needs 438 for an unlikely victory at Newlands | GettyDespite odds heavily stacked against the team, interim batting coach Jacques Kallis has faith, South Africa is far from out of the contest at Newlands and must believe it can chase down England's massive 438-run target having ended Day 4 on 126/2, still 312 runs behind the goalpost.

It'll take great skill and determination from the Proteas to eclipse the mountain. But for Kallis, without putting too much pressure on themselves, players should focus on batting small passages correctly, doing little things right and continue reassessing the situation.

"All three results are probably possible," the great all-rounder told reporters in Cape Town. "It will be a tough ask to chase it down to be brutally honest, but we are not ruling it out."

"We will just bat normally and have a look at tea to see where we are. First, we must just try and face as many balls as we can."

"The wicket has flattened out and become a good wicket to bat on. For the spinners there is help bowling to the left-handers."

"But it is very battable and we must believe we can bat the day out," Kallis added. "If we play well, we can get close. It is not unachievable to bat the whole day. It’s a good wicket. As long as we keep making England fight for our wickets, who knows what can happen."

Kallis was involved in that historic Perth 2008 run-chase which the current Proteas unit should take inspiration from. "It’s quite easy to look at the whole day and say it is long," he said. "But we must take it ball by ball and fight that ball you are facing to make sure you be there for the next one."

"If you look too far ahead you lose focus on what you have to do. It’s a chance for guys to be heroes, to see how far we can go. Whatever happens tomorrow, this young team will learn something from this Test."
