Pakistan's disastrous batting show in Australia has seen the selectors pave way for left-hand batsman Fawad Alam's return to the Test squad for the two-match home series against Sri Lanka beginning December 11 in Rawalpindi.

Fawad last turned up in whites for his country in 2009 and had been piling on runs in domestic first-class cricket ever since without any reward. The now 34-year-old replaces Iftikhar Ahmed, who managed just 44 runs in four innings down under.

In hope of another quick fix, the selection panel led by head coach Misbah Ul Haq himself, gave a maiden Test call-up to left-arm pacer Usman Shenwari and dropped young quick Muhammad Musa for going wicketless in Adelaide.

Teen pace sensation Naseem Shah, however, keeps his place. The 16-year was recently also named for the nation's U-19 World Cup campaign in South Africa. Kashif Bhatti, the uncapped 33-year-old left-arm spinner, who didn't get a game in Australia, is another player who has been retained.

Karachi will host the second Test from December 19 onwards.

The series is part of the inaugural World Test Championship cycle and carries a weightage of 120 points.

Pakistan squad: Azhar Ali (capt), Abid Ali, Asad Shafiq, Babar Azam, Fawad Alam, Haris Sohail, Imam-ul-Haq, Imran Khan, Kashif Bhatti, Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Naseem Shah, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shan Masood, Yasir Shah, Usman Shinwari
