AUS v PAK 2019: Waqar Younis hoping for improved performances from young Pakistani pacers in future

The visitors' young pace attack struggled badly down under during the two-match Test series.

Naseem Shah & co will be better for the experience | GettyPakistan's inexperienced pace attack may have had a difficult time in Australia during the 2-0 Test series loss but bowling coach Waqar Younis reckons those youngsters will learn from their mistakes this tour and only get better from here on.

In absence of Mohammad Amir and Wahab Riaz, who earlier this year retired from Test cricket, chief selector and head coach Misbah Ul Haq was forced to fast track the likes of Naseem Shah and Muhammad Musa but they, along with the more experienced Mohammad Abbas, Imran Khan and Shaheen Afridi, struggled badly.

"Yes I admit that we didn’t get the sort of performances or results we wanted from them. But for teenagers you tend to be unable to maintain the line and length you need to bowl in test matches," Waqar said in podcast from the Pakistan Cricket Board.

"I think once they play few matches more over a period of a year they will get better and Shaheen is a example of this."

Pakistan is now due to play Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in the next two months, as part of the inaugural World Test Championship cycle. But while there is a lot of scrutiny over their decision making from outside, Waqar and Misbah, it is learnt, have been assured full support of the board by PCB CEO Wasim Khan despite poor results.

"They are going to be no major changes or pressing of the panic button. The performances of the team will be reviewed after the Sri Lanka tests and before Bangladesh come in mid-January," a source was quoted as saying by PTI
