The Ashes series ended in a 2-2 draw as Australia retained the urn after a grueling month and a half of Test cricket. Australian and English legends Shane Warne and Michael Vaughan have reacted to the series rather analytically.

Shane Warne said, “These are two really evenly matched sides. All the questions we had over top-order batting all those have been the way it has worked out. If you look at this Test series, to finish off the summer after a fantastic World Cup and then the Ashes. If you look through this series and all the comebacks we have had, it has been a fantastic series of cricket.

He was one of the many supporters that felt that Australia’s decision to bowl first in the final Ashes Test was a blunder and they have themselves to blame for the loss.

I think they played the better cricket for the majority of the series and I think they deserved to win but having said that they only have themselves to blame for losing at The Oval. For the team selection and choosing to bowl first on Thursday morning and it will be a weird feeling lifting the urn after drawing the series 2-2,” he added.

Former England Ashes-winning captain Michael Vaughan believed that even though the Australian team deserved to retain the urn, the England cricket team should be happy with the fact that they could beat the Aussies in the final Test after conceding the series.

The 44-year-old said, “Australia deserved to retain the Ashes. England have got to celebrate the fact that a few days ago Australia retained the Ashes and we all expected Australia to blow them away this week. With the ball in particular they have been exceptional. Stuart Broad has stepped up and produced another wonderful performance in an Ashes series.

This week, as much as it is about the team, it is about Joe Root. He needed this week to give himself a boost. He is doing a lot right. I am really pleased for him. I know how much he wants to be England captain,” he added.
