England’s Jofra Archer put on a fast bowling exhibition during the opening day of the third Ashes Test against Australia at Headingley on Thursday (August 22).

Archer, who made his Test debut at Lord’s last week, claimed his maiden five-wicket haul in red-ball cricket and finished with the figures of 6/45 to help England bundle out the tourists for 179.

David Warner, Marcus Harris, Matthew Wade, James Pattinson, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon were the victims of Archer on a weather-affected day.

Warner, who found some form in the opening day of the third Test with a solid knock of 61, admitted that it was tough to combat the England pacers, especially Jofra’s world-class bowling.

“That was incredible Test bowling. England put the ball in the right areas,” Warner quoted as saying by Reuters after the first day’s play in Leeds.

“He [Jofra Archer] bowled at bit like Dale Steyn with the new ball, tried to use the conditions and ramp it up when he needed to. It was world-class bowling at its best,” the southpaw added.

At one point in time, Australia were on top after a gusty partnership of 111 runs between Warner and Marnus Labuschagne, who played a fine knock of 74. But Archer turned the table by removing Warner, which also triggered the collapse.

Bowling at a slightly slower pace than he did at Lord’s, Archer said his style reflected the conditions.

“I don’t need to run in and bowl 90 (miles per hour) every spell to get wickets. It has shown that today. There will be times in Test matches you have to focus on hitting your length. There will be times to ramp it up as well but you don’t have to go into it every innings,” Jofra remarked.

“These are things you train for. If you train hard you will be rewarded. We bowled well as a team at Lord’s, luckily enough for us it happened today,” he continued.
