Former pacer Michael Kasprowicz thinks Australia's resurgent 251-run win in the first Test at Edgbaston will have given the team a lot of confidence for the rest of the Ashes campaign.

The Aussies found themselves 122/8 on Day 1 before needing to overcome a 90-run deficit in the second innings, and yet came out victorious in the end.

Steve Smith led the fight with two legendary hundreds and was rewarded with the "Player-of-the-Match" award.

"It's an amazing feeling when a team has that belief, when you believe you can win from anywhere. It's strong and I really think Justin has put that in there," Kasprowicz told reporters.

"They'll all realise that's the case ... and you'll find the players will be ready for this game."

Kasprowicz further reckons Smith's marathon effort will inspire his teammates to go out there and clinch a very strong 2-0 lead in the five-match series.

"The way he played ... that's going to instil belief in the team. It's so infectious."

"One of the most exciting things is the depth of fast bowling in Australia right now. There's a lot of great players who weren't able to make the side," he said in context of the Lord's Test, which begins on August 14.

Australia hasn't won an Ashes in England since 2001.
