Dinesh Chandimal is part of Sri Lanka's 15-man squad announced for the first match of a two-match Test series at home against New Zealand.

The former captain was dropped across all formats after a poor series versus Australia earlier in the year.

He has played 53 Tests since making his debut in 2011 and aggregates 3,768 runs at an average of 41.9, including 11 tons and 17 fifties.

Meanwhile, Angelo Mathews has also found his way back into the Test side after missing the tour of South Africa due to a hamstring injury.

Selectors also handed comebacks to Akila Dananjaya and Niroshan Dickwella, who both did well for Sri Lanka A in India this June.

The board has cut short the earlier announced 22-man roster by excluding Kasun Rajitha, Asitha Fernando, Danushka Gunathilaka, Shehan Jayasuriya, Chamika Karunaratne, Dilruwan Perera and Angelo Perera.

Part of the inaugural World Test Championship cycle, the Test series begins in Galle on August 14, with the next game scheduled for August 22 start in Colombo.

Sri Lanka Squad for 1st Test: Dimuth Karunaratne (c), Angelo Mathews, Dinesh Chandimal, Lahiru Thirimanne, Kusal Mendis, Kusal Perera, Niroshan Dickwella, Dhananjaya De Silva, Akila Dananjaya, L Embuldeniya, Suranga Lakmal,Lahiru Kumara, Oshada Fernando, Lakshan Sandakan, Vishwa Fernando
