After a heartbreaking 1-run loss in the ODI series opener, Indian women’s cricket team made an impressive comeback to register a resounding 53-run victory over West Indies in the second game at Antigua on Sunday (November 3).

Opting to bat first, the Women in Blue rode on Punam Raut’s 77 and notable contributions from skipper Mithali Raj (40) and Harmanpreet Kaur (46) to post 191/6 in 50 overs.

Afy Fletcher was the stand-out bowler for the home team, taking 2 for 32 in her stipulated 10 overs. Aaliyah Alleyne also chipped in with a couple of wickets by conceding 38 runs.

West Indies began their chase poorly and lost opener Stacy-Ann King (6) in the fourth over. Wicketkeeper Shemaine Campbelle, who came in next, then shared a 68-run stand with Natasha McLean before the latter retired hurt at her individual score of 15.

Skipper Stafanie Taylor, who was the Player-of-the-Match in the first ODI, contributed only 20 runs before being trapped in front of the wickets by Poonam Yadav.

Afterwards, things went downhill for the hosts as India’s spin trio of Rajeshwari Gayakwad (2/27), Poonam Yadav (2/26) and Deepti Sharma (2/25) ran through the batting line-up.

Veteran Jhulan Goswami and Shikha Pandey also picked one wicket each and kept a lid on the scoring rate. The West Indies women eventually got bundled out for 138 runs in the 47.2 overs.

The series-deciding third ODI will be played at the same venue on Wednesday (November 6).

Brief Scores:

India 191/6 (Punam Raut 77, Harmanpreet Kaur 46; Afy Fletcher 2/32) beat West Indies 138 all out (Shemaine Campbelle 39, Stafanie Taylor 20; Deepti Sharma 2/25) by 53 runs.
