Having suffered a whitewash in the T20 Internationals at home, West Indies captain Jason Holder has asked his batsmen to step up and take more responsibility to have any chances of success in the three-match One Day International (ODI) series against India, starting from Thursday (August 8).

Coming from disastrous World Cup 2019 campaign, the hosts failed to make the most of the home advantage against Virat Kohli’s young brigade, losing all three T20Is to continue their poor form.

Holder told media ahead of Guyana ODI, “We had quite a bit of time to sit back and think about how the World Cup went and our shortcomings. We've had a few discussions in the group already; obviously, our batting let us down in the World Cup. We always spoke about batting deep and having a set batsman there at the end. That's obviously an area we want to improve on.”

The all-rounder continued, “There were too many instances where we have gotten starts as individuals but never carried them deep into the innings, so that's one area we have pinpointed and once we've tackled that we have put ourselves in our very good position.”

Meanwhile, the West Indies are boosted with the return of Chris Gayle to the national squad, and Holder believes his presence will make a big difference to the young batsmen in the side.

The skipper noted, “His (Gayle's) presence is always felt whenever he steps onto a cricket field or in the dressing room.”

Holder also urged his bowlers be at their wicket-taking best against India to win matches in the impending ODI series. He signed off by saying, “For me it's just a matter of remaining disciplined with the new ball, taking new-ball wickets and focus on their middle order and take the game from there.”
