WI v ENG 2019: Roy banking on his consistency in white-ball cricket for an Ashes call-up

Even Nasser Hussain thinks Jason Roy has a very good chance of reaching there.

Jason Roy has faith that his form in one-day cricket leading upto and till the end of ICC Cricket World Cup can help him earn a maiden call-up to England's Test squad for this summer's Ashes against Australia.

The right-handed opening batsman believes that strong performances against West Indies, Ireland and then Pakistan before filling up his World Cup sojourn with a lot of runs can push his case forward as far as national selectors' plans for red-ball cricket is concerned.

"Absolutely," he told Sky Sports ahead of the first ODI in the Caribbean on Wednesday, February 20, "If that call comes, then happy days. I've just got to work hard and make sure my game is in order if and when I do get that Test call."

"It's not a case of, 'Yeah, it's going to happen' or, 'No, it's not going to'. It's a case of making sure I'm the best cricketer I can be if that chance comes about."

The insipid form of regular Test openers Keaton Jennings, Rory Burns and Joe Denly has actually strengthened Roy's claim. Even former England captain Nasser Hussain reckons he has a very good chance of fulfilling his ambition.

"My gut feel is that the person England really want to come in to play in the Ashes is Jason Roy - but you can't just fly Roy out here," Hussain said.

"This is the quandary they have. They might stick with Jennings and then hope that Roy has early season form - but Roy bats in the middle order for Surrey as well. So there are problems."
