Our batting has probably let us down on a few occasions, says Holder.

Jason Holder has returned from injury to lead West Indies in the three-match Test series against England, starting from Wednesday (January 23) in Barbados.

Holder, who missed the Bangladesh series with the injury, has urged his batsmen to be more consistent against the strong English attack ahead of the Test series opener at Kensington Oval, saying that was something that has really plagued West Indies in the past.

He further went on to stress on the need to start the Test series well by putting great runs on the board in the first innings to make their case strong against England and to which his batsmen need to be more consistent and stick to their game plans for long periods to win matches against such strong side.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Holder told media, “Our consistency is something that has really plagued us in the past. Particularly with our batting. Our batting has probably let us down on a few occasions. I just think we need to start the series well by putting some runs on the board in the first innings and making an early statement.”

He continued, “England obviously have a quality bowling attack, but we've seen glimpses of what we can do against this attack. We obviously had a really good time at Headingley and fought back well in that series. And then last time in the Caribbean we did really well to fight back here in Barbados. We definitely know we can perform against this attack. It's just a case of being consistent and sticking to our game plans for long periods.”

Meanwhile, Shannon Gabriel and Kemar Roach will lead the Windies pace attack against England and the skipper is hoping for a strong attack from the duo in the home series.

Holder signed off by saying, “What you've seen of this attack in the last couple of series is consistency. We've done a hell of a job of trying to take 20 wickets more often than not. We have some seasoned campaigners in Roach and Gabriel who have led the bowling attack nicely and I hope we can continue in that direction.”
