ICC clears T20 World Cup 2020 tickets dilemma after global event is postponed

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday (July 20) confirmed the postponement of the seventh edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2020 in Australia due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The ICC has also announced that the next year’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will be held in October – November 2021 with the final scheduled on 14 November 2021 followed by the 2022 global T20 event in November.  The ICC has also shifted the 2023 World Cup from the February-March to October-November.

The ICC had already opened ticket booking through their ticketing partners and a significant number of tickets have been already sold and following the latest development, the fans who have already purchased tickets for the now-postponed T20 event would certainly in dilemma regarding the same.

However, the world’s sporting body has made it clear in a FAQ on their website that the ticket holders will be able to retain their ticket, saying if Australia hosts the 2021 T20 World Cup, fans who have already bought the tickets will be eligible to watch matches on the same tickets with a new date.

Although the ICC has not yet announced which country will host the 2021 T20 World Cup which is currently scheduled to play in India – the country will also host the 2023 World Cup.

In case the 2021 T20 World Cup is shifted to 2022, all ticket holders will be entitled to full refund within 30 days after the request for the refunds has been submitted online.

The fans can fill an online ticket refund request form and select “I have not received my refund” from the refund option list till December 15, 2020.

ICC stated in a series of FAQs: “Ticket holders are welcome to retain their tickets, noting: If Australia hosts in 2021, tickets will remain valid for fans who have already bought and will be automatically updated to reflect the new dates. If Australia hosts in 2022, for tickets already bought a full refund will be processed automatically.”

The board further stated, “Tickets can be retained until a decision has been made on new dates for the event. Once a decision on new dates has been made, the following applies to ticket holders: If Australia hosts in 2021, tickets will remain valid for fans who have already bought and will be automatically updated to reflect the new dates. If Australia hosts in 2022, for tickets already bought a full refund will be processed automatically. Refund requests can be made up until 15 December 2020.

Once a request for a refund is made, the seats will no longer be available to you if the event goes ahead in 2021. You will be required to purchase new tickets which will be subject to availability. You can request a refund by submitting an online ticket refund form.”

It concluded, “If you purchased tickets before the postponement announcement on 21 July 2020, the last day you may request a refund is 15 December 2020. If you purchased an ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2020 Hospitality package your package is valid for the 2021 fixture, but we are unable to compensate any travel or costs associated with your attendance of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2020.”
