Meg Lanning is the third Australian captain to win World Cup at home | GettyThe Australian team beat India women by 85 runs in the final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2020 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in front of more than 85,000 people and lifted the trophy for the fifth time.

This was a dominant victory for the home team who had a hard-fought path to the final, starting with a defeat to India in the first match of the tournament. India reached the finals unbeaten and with a rain wash out victory over England in the semis.

Australia began the pressure with Allyssa Healy going bang-bang during her 75, while Mooney batted through the innings for her 78, with the duo adding 115 runs for the first wicket.

Indian batting had been overly reliant on Shafali Verma scoring big runs in the powerplay and her success in finals was a must in chase of the 185-run target. However, Megan Schutt, who had admitted she hated bowling against India, removed her on the third ball of the first over and set the tone of all the remaining innings, as India finished on 99 and lost by 85 runs.

Meg Lanning became the third Australian captain after Lyn Larsen in 1988 and Michael Clarke in 2015, to win a World Cup at home.

The cricket fraternity was amazed at the dominance of the Australia women’s team and praised their fifth T20 World Cup title win on Twitter.
