Women’s T20WC 2020: Rachael Haynes’ 60 helps Australia women brush past Sri Lanka by 5 wickets

Australia registered their first win of the tournament.

Chamari Atapattu | GettyThe 5th match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2020 saw hosts Australia take on Sri Lanka at the WACA Ground, Perth. Australia needed a win in this match, as they had lost the first match to India. Sri Lanka Women won the toss and chose to bat first.

Skipper Chamari Atapattu scored 50, while keeper Anushka Sanjeewani made 25 and U Thimasini made 20 runs, as Sri Lanka women put 122/6 on board. Nicola Carey (2/18) and Molly Strano (2/23) were the picks of bowlers for Australia.

Meg Lanning | GettyIn reply, Udeshika Prabodhani removed Alyssa Healy (0) and Ashleigh Gardner (2) cheaply. While Mooney fell for 6 runs. Captain Meg Lanning then anchored the innings with 41* with four fours, while Rachael Haynes made 60 in 47 balls with 4 fours and 2 sixes.

The match went down to the wire, with victory coming with three balls to spare with five wickets in hand. Prabodhani picked 2/17 and Shashikala Siriwardene picked 2/20, but it proved to be ineffective.

Australia won by 5 wickets and Rachael Haynes won the Player of the Match award.
