Women's T20WC 2020: Veda Krishnamurthy warns India against complacency after Australian win

The Indian team pulled off an unlikely victory over the tournament favourites in the opening game.

Team India defeated Australia in the T20 World Cup opener | GettyVeda Krishnamurthy warned the Indian team against complacency after defeating a formidable Australian line-up in the opening game of the Women's T20 World Cup in Sydney last weekend as the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side goes deeper into its tournament campaign, starting with the next match versus Bangladesh on Monday (February 24) in Perth.

Even in the victory over the Aussies, the Indian batting line-up didn't post as many runs on the board as it would've ideally liked to. But thanks to an amazing spell of bowling from leg-spinner Poonam Yadav, the Women in Blue were able to save the day for themselves by a slender margin.

So there are still areas of concerns, which shall keep the team on its toes.

"We can't be complacent with the victory (against Australia). We have to let go of those emotions now and focus on repeating all the good things we did," Krishnamurthy, the middle-order batter, told reporters.

"We want to make sure we have enough of a score for our bowlers to defend. At the same time, we can't be too ambitious with our strokes or risk being run short but we need to make sure we get enough runs on board."

"As you all saw, our bowling attack is doing really well. It's all about giving them that extra cushioning. If we had finished 15 runs shorter on Friday (against Australia), it would have been a lot more difficult for us," added the 27-year-old.

Bangladesh skipper Salma Khatun, on the other hand, urged her side to not be intimidated by this Indian team after its Australian victory, especially having defeated India twice during the 2018 T20 Asia Cup.

"We are not worried about the result between India and Australia. We are just focused on our own. We have been watching the opening matches of the tournament with keen interest and we are really excited to get going in this one," said Khatun.

"All our girls put their 100 per cent into the warm-up match against Pakistan and we hope to have a positive start at this World Cup."
