Women’s T20WC 2020: South Africa beats England by 6 wickets; Van Niekerk shines

Mignon du Preez became the first South African player, male or female, to play 100 T20Is.

Natalie Sciver celebrates her half-century | GettyThe fourth match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2020 saw South Africa take on England in a Group B clash at the WACA ground in Perth. Dane van Niekerk won the toss and put England in to bat first.

Natalie Sciver made 50 and Amy Jones made 23 as England managed to make 123/8 in 20 overs. Ayabonga Khaka picked 3/25, while Marizanne Kapp and Van Niekerk picked two wickets apiece.

Kapp picked two wickets and made 38 runs | GettyIn reply, South Africa lost Lizelle Lee for 4 runs, but skipper Van Niekerk continued her good form with the bat and scored 46. She got great support from Marizanne Kapp, who made 38. But England picked a few wickets in middle overs, to put pressure on the opposition.

However, Mignon du Preez, who was playing her 100th T20I, kept her cool, making 18* in 11 balls to take her team home with 2 balls to spare. South Africa made 127/4 and won the match by six wickets. For England, Sophie Ecclestone picked 2/19, while Shrubsole and Glenn picked one each.

Dane van Niekerk got the Player of the Match for her 46 and two wickets.
