Kane Williamson was a disappointed captain as New Zealand suffered a comprehensive eight-wicket defeat at the hands of Australia in the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday (November 14).

In the all-important game, New Zealand posted 172/4 on the board after being asked to bat first. Williamson top scored for the Kiwis with 85 off 48 balls, including 10 fours and 3 sixes.

In reply, Australia rode on Mitchell Marsh’s unbeaten 77 off 50 balls and David Warner’s 38-ball 53 to overhaul the target with seven balls to spare.

"We were trying to get a platform and the surface was holding a fraction. But typical to here in Dubai. It was nice to build some partnerships and get what we thought was a competitive total. Only to be chased superbly by Australia,” said Williamson during the post-match presentation.

The Kiwi captain admitted that his side fell short against a fantastic team and he cannot fault his team for not trying enough.

“They're a fantastic side. We certainly made every effort. Guys came out and committed to their plans. They didn't give an inch really.

"Really proud of our team's efforts throughout. Came here in the final and gave it our best shot but it wasn't enough. Conditions varied a lot from venue to venue but we adjusted well. Nice to get to the big dance. Credit to Australia. Today they really turned it on. High hopes coming into this game. Never nice. Winning and losing are two possible outcomes," he added.

For his stellar knock in the final, Marsh won the Player-of-the-Match award while Warner was adjudged the Player-of-the-Tournament as he returned with 289 runs.
