SA vs IND 2018: SA batsmen failed to read Chahal and Kuldeep, says JP Duminy

It was yet another failure of a batting performance from the South African batsmen as have now lost 3 ODIs in a row and after a successful Test campaign, their hopes of winning an ODI series are done and dusted.

The South African batting order skittled out for 179 chasing 303 for victory in Cape Town. JP Duminy tried to wage a lone battle as he scored 51 but couldn't continue any longer to help South Africa even get close to the Indian total.

He accepted South Africa's failure to counter the spin of Chahal and Kuldeep either off the hand or off the pitch. South Africa lost 8 wickets to the Indian spin duo to increase problems of playing spin for the rest of the series as very much of the same awaits them in the remaining four ODIs.

The absence of Faf du Plessis, AB de Villiers and Quinton de Kock thus becomes important in the context of this discussion. In his post-match presser, Duminy spoke about what went wrong in the South African innings as far as playing spin was concerned.

"What they've done really well is assess the conditions in terms of what they need to do, what sort of speed and length they need to bowl. They (Chahal and Yadav) haven't made it easy for us to get singles," Duminy said.

"A lot of us have not picked their googlies. We've not been good enough. They've bowled well enough not to let us play according to our game plan. We've got to come up with different ways of countering them. They've outplayed us in all departments," he further added.

Duminy and Aiden Markram put on 78 runs for the second wicket, but after the latter's stumping South Africa's chase fell apart. "At that point we were building quite a nice partnership so it was just about rotating the strike. We know at a venue like this if you have wickets in hand you give yourselves a chance chasing eight or nine an over," Duminy said.

"Unfortunately throughout the series we've lost wickets in clusters so we haven't given ourselves a chance. We've got plans of how to counter their spin, but unfortunately, the execution hasn't been good enough," spoke Duminy of South Africa's misery against the Indian spinners currently.

The left-hander said South Africa batsmen are finding it difficult to pick Chahal and Yadav. "We've just got to find a way to counter them (Chahal and Yadav). The key is definitely to try and be positive, but unfortunately, on a few occasions, we haven't picked the wrong'uns," When you are not picking their wrong 'uns, you are not necessarily comfortable. Once you become comfortable with picking their deliveries, that's when you can play with confidence" he said.

Duminy also spoke highly of how Kohli compiled his innings at Cape Town. Citing Kohli's innings, Duminy said South Africa have been undone by lack of partnerships in the ongoing series. "Look at Virat's innings today, the way he paced it. He didn't strike at 100 today but then picked it up at the end".

Duminy summed up his presser by putting down the reason of the defeat to the lack of partnerships in the chase. "We've spoken a lot about how crucial partnerships are, but unfortunately we haven't had the opportunity to put together partnerships," he signed off saying.

South Africa will get back the services of AB de Villiers in the next three ODIs as he is in line for a return in Johhanesburg.
