South Africa started from their overnight score of 6/1 and lost Dean Elgar for 4, caught by Patel off Bhuvneshwar on morning of day 2. Rabada (30) and Amla added 65 runs before Rabada was caught by Rahane off Ishant Sharma.

Bhuvneshwar then castled AB de Villiers for 5 and Du Plessis left an incoming delivery from Bumrah and was bowled for 8. Quinton de Kock’s poor run continued as he was dismissed by Bumrah for 8. Vernon Philander made 35 runs and added 44 runs with Amla. Amla was then caught on the boundary for 61 and then Bumrah wiped the tail off by picking his first five wicket haul in Test cricket.

South Africa was bowled out for 194 runs with a lead of 7 runs. Bhuvneshwar Kumar picked 3/44 while Shami and Ishant picked one wicket each.

India made a surprise choice of opening with Parthiv Patel instead of KL Rahul and move initially paid off as Patel hit 16 runs in 13 balls, before an inside edge off his pad was caught by Markram off Philander. M Vijay (13*) and KL Rahul (16*) played out the remainder of the overs out and India ended the day on 49/1 with a lead of 42 runs.
