Australia opener Cameron Bancroft found himself in trouble after the cameras caught him using a foreign object to work on the ball during the third day of the third Test at Newlands.

Video aired by the official broadcaster shows Bancroft using a small, yellow object hidden in his palm, as he rubbed the ball with his palm and then onto his trousers. He is then seen transferring something from that palm into his right pocket.

The footage was brought to the notice of the two on field umpires Nigel Llong and Richard Illingworth, who immediately halted play and conferred in the middle of the pitch.

A second clip showed Bancroft adjusting his pants as the umpires met. A third clip of the same moment, which gave a frontal view, showed Bancroft transferring a small, square yellow object from his right pocket into his trousers.

The umpires called Australia captain Steve Smith as well as Bancroft for a discussion. They appeared to ask Bancroft what was in his pocket, and he produced a soft black sunglasses case. Questions about ball tampering have been raised throughout the series, where reverse swing has been a consistent theme.

Warner was highlighted for the bandages on his hand in Port Elizabeth, the result of numerous finger injuries suffered while batting in the past, and on day one at Newlands the fast bowler Pat Cummins inadvertently tread on the ball.

Even South Africa fast bowler Dale Steyn questioned this on his Twitter.
