SA vs AUS 2018: AB de Villiers likens the Newlands pitch similar to the 2011 strip

South Africa scored 311 in their first innings.

AB de Villiers' getting out on 64 pretty much opened the floodgates for an Australian comeback in the third Test match at Newlands.

While Dean Elgar who scored a century on Day 1 said that its a tough pitch to bat on, AB De Villiers differs with him on this point.

Australia rolled the Proteas for 96 at Newlands in 2011, claiming a first-innings lead of 188 runs, then watched in disbelief as they were skittled for 47.

"It reminds me quite a bit, and I'm not saying it's going to happen, of that wicket," de Villiers told SuperSport, having scored 64 and threatening to produce his second century of the four-Test series."

"I'm not saying it's going to be wickets galore in the next couple of innings, but it played similar to that first innings. Michael Clarke made it look quite easy and then it just started going a little bit around.Just when you feel in you can get out, just like myself."

South Africa have started batting on the second day and have crossed 300 runs in the first innings. Pat Cummins bowled a deadly spell late in the day to bring Australia back in the game by taking four wickets for 7 runs. This spell of bowling brought the Proteas down to 266 for 8 from 220 for3. South Africa have been finally bowled out for 311 in their first innings with Elgar scoring 141 not out.
