South Africa wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock has been penalized by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for his stairwell altercation with Australia vice-captain David Warner during the recently concluded Durban Test.

De Kock was charged for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct and has been fined 25 percent of his match fee. The Proteas glovesman also earns one demerit point for bringing the game into disrepute.

The CCTV video of that ugly spat emerged on Monday (March 5) in which a fired-up Warner can be seen directing a verbal barrage at De Kock when the teams walked upstairs to the change rooms during the tea break on the fourth day of the first Test at Kingsmead. The leaked video also shows Warner being held back by his teammates.

Earlier in the day, Warner was charged with a Level 2 breach of the ICC's code of conduct for tainting the game and has been fined 75 percent of his match fee (approximately $13,500) and given three demerit points.

It is worth mentioning here that Level 2 offence can warrant up to four demerit points which result in an automatic suspension of one Test or two limited-overs internationals, whichever comes first.

Given the fact that Warner has accepted a sanction of three points imposed on him by ICC match referee Jeff Crowe, he is free to take part in the Port Elizabeth Test, scheduled to start on Friday (March 9).

Durban Test was full of on-field hostility. On Monday (March 5), Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon was penalized by the International Cricket Council for dropping the ball on AB de Villiers after the veteran batsman was run out in South Africa's second innings.

In the 12th over of the innings delivered by Lyon, David Warner produced a gem of an effort on the field to pass the ball at the non-striker end where Lyon dislodged the bails to run out de Villiers. However, after dislodging the bails Lyon unwarrantedly dropped the ball which grazed the chest of de Villiers who was down on the ground while attempting to get back to the crease.

Nathan Lyon was charged with a Level 1 breach, as per which he has been fined 15 percent of his match fee and one demerit point got added to his name. Lyon was found to violate Article 2.1.1 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which relates to "conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game."

As far as the result of the match is concerned – Australia won the Durban Test by 118 runs and consequently took a 1-0 lead in the four-match Test series. Left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc was adjudged ‘Player of the Match’ for his 9-wicket haul in the match.
