Recently appointed Sri Lankan Captain Dinesh Chandimal has opined that the national selectors haven't helped his side's cause for the upcoming five-match ODI series against England by dropping the team's invaluable asset, Angelo Mathews.

Sri Lanka Cricket(SLC) officially announced Chandimal as their One-Day Internationals Captain, replacing Angelo Mathews after asking him to resign from his position following the Asia Cup disaster.

Sri Lanka couldn't even make it to the second round of the recently concluded Asia Cup 2018 in United Arab Emirates, as the Island nation lost quite one-sidedly to both their Group opponents Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

The limited overs game has, for a while, been Sri Lanka's worst performing format and hence, the selectors decided to make a change in the side's leadership position.

Earlier in the year, Chandimal successfully replaced Mathews for ODIs and T20Is assignments as the latter found himself injured and now the former has been reinstated as the full-time limited overs captain. Chandimal is already Sri Lanka's regular Test Captain and one of their best players.

Ahead of the first ODI at Dambulla on Wednesday, October 10, Chandimal was quoted saying, “We all know he(Mathews) is our best batsman, especially when it comes to the shorter formats," he added, “I hope he will identify what he needs to do to come back to the side and come back strongly. It is mainly his fitness,” and signed off.
