PAK v NZ 2018: Kiwi captain Kane Williamson urges batsmen to learn from Dubai collapse

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has urged his batsmen to learn from their mistakes in Dubai, hoping to build on confidence from their second innings show here against Pakistan going into the third and final Test, starting from December 3 in Abu Dhabi.

The Black Caps batters badly struggled, as Yasir Shah’s record-breaking spell of 14/184 proved too costly for the touring side, surrendering for 99 in the first innings, which badly put them back foot in Dubai, eventually losing the match by an innings and 16-runs despite posting 312 in the second innings on Tuesday (November 27).

However, Williamson was impressed with team’s determination that he saw in the second innings, but said their first innings batting was below-par, though, he is hoping to build on that going into the final.

He also lauded the star leg-spinner Shah for his phenomenal show with the ball in the second Test, saying the Pakistan team efforts was also incredible which help them in emerging as the winner here.

Williamson told reporters at the post-match press conference, “Obviously, 90 wasn't ideal. Yasir Shah played extremely well the whole game and Pakistan played extremely well the whole game. But from our perspective, we wanted to be a lot better in that first innings. If we go back to the way Pakistan started, they were able to bat for two days on that surface, which put them in a very good position to be able to bowl and exploit those conditions with their spinners.”

He further added, “They played very, very well, but we also showed in the second innings – perhaps on a wicket that had worn a little bit more – that there were opportunities to score runs, to bat and create an innings. I think it's really important we build on that going into the next game.”

Recalling their four-win in Abu Dhabi, the Kiwi skipper said, “It was a great game in Abu Dhabi, one of our great Test wins which were extremely exciting to be a part of. Then to come here wasn't our best performance by any means, but we know how difficult Pakistan are to play in their conditions.”

Williamson signed off by saying, “It's important that we are better and we learn from this experience here in Dubai. Pakistan will be full of confidence after their performance, but hopefully, we can build on some of the confidence that we took in the second half of this game.”
